ARTIST TALK: THOMAS ORR & ART AND OTHER TACTICS & ARTIST SALON RECEPTION
Craft in America celebrated the long Memorial Day weekend with the opening of Art and Other Tactics: Contemporary Craft by Artist Veterans. Center Director Emily Zaiden introduced the new show with a talk at Saturday’s opening, followed by statements from artists in the show. Artists and museum visitors engaged in conversations about the significance of handmade objects that have been shaped by military experience. The show includes artists featured in Craft in America’s Service episode, such as Judas Recendez and Ehren Tool as well as the Paper Doll Project by Pam DeLuco. Art and Other Tactics will be on view at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles until September 6, 2015. This exhibition will travel to the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, on view there from September 26 2015-March 27, 2016.
Art and Other Tactics: Contemporary Craft by Artist Veterans
Last Wednesday, Thomas Orr joined us at the Center for an evening Artist Salon after a day installing Art and Other Tactics. Orr told of his first encounter with clay, which came in Vietnam when he “slipped face-down in the hillside clay;” he came to understand the tactile qualities of clay as “just peaceful to me.” Orr described the journey that led him to develop process driven and iconographic reflections on his experiences in active duty.
