Active Hands: Craft by Soldiers
April 25 – July 4, 2015
Active Hands: Craft by Soldiers features rare treasures made by soldiers on active duty, as well as historic documentation of the Army Arts and Crafts Program, which has allowed thousands of soldiers and their families to find respite in the handmade since World War II. As part of Craft in America’s ongoing exploration of the connections between craft and the military, this exhibition highlights the inclination to create as a means of surviving, communicating and maintaining health of spirit. These selected objects provide a glimpse into the untold and inspiring chapters of the American military experience.
This exhibition is a counterpart to Art and Other Tactics: Contemporary Craft by Artist Veterans, our partnership exhibition to be held at the Craft and Folk Art Museum from May 23, 2015 – September 6, 2016.
