Departure Duo: “If you can bare the trouth”: Narratives from the world of soprano and double bass.
This program explores narratives, storytelling, and their roots in a varied program of Departure Duo commissions alongside preexisting works. With works by Sarah Gibson, John Liberatore, Amy Beth Kirsten, John Aylward, Emily Koh, and David Smooke, this program examines the stories we tell and the methods we use to tell them. With literary sources as varied as Joyce, Rilke, Timothy Dexter, and emojis, this program promises a diverse look into the world of soprano and double bass!
Boston-based Departure Duo is a soprano and double bass duo committed to expanding the repertoire for their “high-low” combination. Together, bassist Edward Kass and soprano Nina Guo are particularly interested in how extended technique and theatricality can expand the range of expression for both players and engage audiences. The duo’s long-term goal, 30x’30, is to have 30 hours of soprano/double bass repertoire by 2030. Recent highlights include performances at Spoleto Festival USA, Omaha Under the Radar, and an upcoming show at Oh My Ears! Festival in Phoenix.
