Therman Statom artist talk, Craft as a Catalyst for Change
Opening Reception for TEACHERS: Objects from the Episode

Acclaimed glass artist Therman Statom will give an opening talk for the TEACHERS exhibition debut. Statom, known for his painted ladders, houses, chairs and boxes constructed out of plate glass with blown glass and found objects, studied glass at Pilchuck and the Rhode Island School of Design. He holds an MFA from Pratt and has taught at UCLA. He has received commissions for countless permanent large-scale installations, including the Los Angeles Central Public Library. He will discuss the role of craft in both a personal context and as a language and tool for change.

Now based in Omaha, NE, Statom has focused on the importance of advocacy and educational programming within the arts. He has taken a deep interested in employing workshops as a catalyst for social change and in affect, positively impacting a community. While in Los Angeles, he will be facilitating hands-on projects with LAUSD students at Rosewood Elementary School and Clinton Middle School.
