Reading Craft Book Discussion: Kiff Slemmons Sept 6, 6:30pm
Thursday, September 6, 2018
6:30-8pm
6:30pm: Light refreshments
7pm: Discussion begins
Join the Craft in America Center in discussing Kiff Slemmons & Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca while surrounded by Slemmons’ exhibition “Collective Presence.” In this open dialogue, we will focus on the influences Oaxaca has had on the artist, and the impact Kiff has had in Oaxaca, specifically in the paper workshop founded by Francisco Toledo, Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca.
From the book: “He thought I might have something to offer through my knowledge of jewelry. However, I worked with metal not paper. But I like what happens when obstacles present themselves and the renewed energy that often comes with such shifts in materials – and circumstances.”
This quote from the artist will serve as a starting point for the group to discuss comparisons between Kiff’s jewelry made in metal and paper, how her work is an example of transforming hard metal ideas into soft fibers.
Other books we will be noting:
Kiff Slemmons’ Re:Pair and Imperfection
Kiff Slemmons’: Hands of the Heroes
All are welcome to visit our library to view copies of the books in advance. Please reserve your spot at rsvp@
