The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) offers prestigious City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship program annually to honor a spectrum of 10-15 creative design/visual, literary, and/or performing artists.

These grants of $10,000 each allow the selected artists (architects, graphic/product designers, poets, fiction writers, video/filmmakers, choreographer-dancers, composer-musicians, theatrical performance artists, sculptures, painters and/or photographers) to create their next body of work. In providing these stipends, the City purchases the ability to premiere these innovative new artworks in a group exhibition and catalog.

Eligible artists are those who primarily work as a solo creator of new ideas, forms, and expressions and should be able to clearly demonstrate all three of following criteria:

1) EITHER a primary residence in the City of LA, OR a history of having presented works in public displays within the City of LA at least three times in the last ten years

2) an active exhibition/presentation record of at least 15 years (which may include shows when the applicant was a post-secondary student and was making mature artwork), and

3) write a narrative explaining the genesis and intentions of their work and provide a forecast of the work they are likely to be create with $10,000 between September 2018 and April 2019.

Joe Smoke has been the Director of DCA Grant Programs for 20 years. At this special workshop Mr. Smoke will provide: an introduction to this opportunity, an overview of the process, and strategic advice on how to make the most competitive proposal.
