Curator Conversation: John Cederquist in Southern California

Join the Craft in America Center as we consider John Cederquist’s evolving relationship with wood, studio furniture, and sculpture. Center Director Emily Zaiden and Independent Curator Sharon K. Emanuelli will reflect on experiences curating exhibitions of Cederquist’s work and the significance of his oeuvre. Cederquist appropriates imagery from Classic Hollywood animation and 19th Century Japanese woodblock prints. This Southern California artist speaks to the heart of what it means to live in this region, from the importance of water conservation, to surfing, to lunch in a bento box!

Sharon K. Emanuelli is an independent art historian and arts administrator. Emanuelli was on the program and curatorial staff of the Craft and Folk Art Museum from 1977-1984, and rose to the position of Senior Curator where she organized “John Cederquist: Deceptions” in 1983 and authored the catalog. While at the American Craft Museum, she completed an in-depth chronology of the history of the American Craft Movement, 1851-1986, that was included in the publication for the exhibition, “Craft Today: Poetry of the Physical.”  Shan has completed independent projects for the Archives of American Art, CAFAM, the Pacific Asia Museum, CSUN Art Galleries, Getty Trust Publications, Craft in America, and other venues.
