The Craft in America Center is a small museum and library that presents artist talks, scholarly lectures, hands-on workshops and concerts in addition to regularly changing exhibitions. Our publications offer a deeper dive into the practices of select artists and topics.
The Center works in tandem with the acclaimed PBS documentary series to give voice to traditional and contemporary craft, ranging from functional to purely conceptual. Being a brick and mortar venue, the Center provides the public an opportunity for direct personal engagement with art, artists and ideas.
The Craft in America Center produces 5-8 exhibitions a year, both on site and traveling. Exhibitions highlight the work of numerous Los Angeles craft-based artists while providing a local platform for the nation’s accomplished artists working across all craft media. For those not able to visit in-person, digitized exhibitions and recorded talks and interviews are archived online as resources for all to access.
The Center also operates an education outreach program, Craft in Schools, which offers standards-based art education for underrepresented LAUSD and public K-12 schools and local colleges. This program facilitates hands-on workshops, demonstrations, student field trips both at our Center and in schools.
About Craft in America
Craft in America is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit arts organization founded in 2004 with the mission to promote and advance original handcrafted work through programs in all media. The Peabody Award-winning, Emmy-nominated Craft in America documentary series first aired nationally on PBS in 2007 and has produced twenty-seven hour-long episodes to date. These programs are filled with artists, techniques, and stories from diverse cultures, blending history with living practice. Production is now underway for two new episodes of Craft in America, Play and Miniatures, scheduled to air in fall, 2023.
In addition to the series, Craft in America’s organizational efforts include extensive websites (www.pbs.org/craft-in-america/ and www.craftinamerica.org), a YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/@craftinamerica), multi-disciplinary educator guides that adhere to national standards, and the Craft in America Center in Los Angeles. All of Craft in America’s multimedia educational content is provided to the public at no charge.
