CRAFT IN AMERICA: BORDERS and NEIGHBORS episodes

Craft in America announces two new episodes of the Peabody Award-winning documentary series, Craft in America. Now in its 9th season on PBS, Craft in America: BORDERS and Craft in America: NEIGHBORS will be broadcast nationwide on Friday, September 29, 2017 (*check local listings). These episodes are part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.

BORDERS and NEIGHBORS explore the relationships and influences that Mexican and American craft artists have on each other and their cultures. By focusing on this shared history and connection, Craft in America reaches across our southern border to recognize the synergy between our cultural identities and to explore how objects carry heritage, memories, and meaning.

Filming with over 25 craft artists, these episodes take viewers to and from the U.S. and Mexico, exploring the people, history, traditions and crafts, noting how aesthetics cross over and back again. These stories confirm the idea that art is without borders. It is a pathway for creativity and the connections that make us human.

Educational Outreach – Craft in America Center’s partner schools (Fairfax High School Arts Magnet, Van Nuys High School, Rosewood Elementary School and Clinton Middle School) will visit the exhibition at the Biscailuz Gallery at El Pueblo Historical Monument and experience docent tours of the park. There will also be hands-on-workshops onsite.

Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles taking place from September 2017 through January 2018. Led by the Getty, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA is a collaboration of arts institutions across Southern California.

Through a series of thematically linked exhibitions and programs, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA highlights different aspects of Latin American and Latino art from the ancient world to the present day. With topics such as luxury arts in the pre-Columbian Americas, 20th century AfroBrazilian art, alternative spaces in Mexico City, and boundary-crossing practices of Latino artists, exhibitions range from monographic studies of individual artists to broad surveys that cut across numerous countries.

Supported by more than $16 million in grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA involves more than 70 cultural institutions from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and from San Diego to Santa Barbara.
